Remarks

The hunt started at 6:03 p.m in one of the many parking lots at Morley Field. W6ZM set up his equipment in pouring rain at approximately 5:50, and even though he had an umbrella covering him he still got wet! He was accompanied by his wife and side-kick, KC6LEA. There were very few cars in the parking lot at the setup because most people were snug at home during the storm. W6ZM got some odd looks and was questioned about his activities by the few bystanders in the area..... they couldn't understand why he was putting up some kind of an antenna in a storm..... :) The signal was verified at the start by K6VCR. Equipment consisted of a 4 element Yagi that was attached to the rear of the hide vehicle. It was vertically polarized and had 160 Watts of power. Hiders kept their fingers crossed that the hunters would find them quickly, mostly because of the rain and they were also hungry too. W6ZM 'Skyped' KE6PHB during the hunt and was able to have a live feed experience inside the cab which was really incredible. This was a great preview into our 'in the works' project of a T-Hunting reality TV show......HAMS gone wild, HAMS on steroids, HAMS versus the Khardashians..... :) In reality, W6ZM was able to have a live conversation and video feed of the two vehicle occupants as they gave a blow-by-blow description of their locations and observations; it was pretty cool, and no comments had to be 'bleeped' out either! The excitement built as the team relayed that they were just a block or two away. By this time it was dark, so W6ZM/KC6LEA were watching for approaching headlights. At 6:37 the first hunt vehicle entered the parking lot and to our surprise it was the team of N6SZO and W6BAF. As they approached the front of the hide vehicle, they pulled over to the curb and the hiding team was sure they had been spotted. Suddenly, the team of KC6VCR/KE6PHB made a surprise entrance onto the scene and blew by Joe C. & Greg just like they were sitting still......well, they actually were sitting still........ and KC6VCR floored it and whipped around the corner, and they were now followed by Joe C. and Greg. Both teams slid into hiding area and it was a real photo finish with both teams finishing at 6:37 with the KC6VCR and KE6PHB winning by just 1 second! It was a very exciting finish...... just imagine if Mario Andretti and Jimmie Johnson were driving with Ham radios in their cars........! The men gathered to share their hunt stories as we anticipated the arrival of team N5BXE, Cliff. W6ZM heard from Cliff via the phone, and Cliff decided that Venice Pizza sounded better than Mazzara's so we all ended up there for dinner. Luckily, by this time the rain had stopped so we all had a safe drive to the restaurant. The food and the company was great and a good time was had by all, except for the iPad that mysteriously disappeared from the Hide vehicle........ this sucked big-time.....ugh!
